Blazers Edge Scots By One In Twin Bill

The Gordon College Fighting Scots' Baseball team returned to the diamond this morning for a twin bill against the Elms College Blazers at NERP Field in Davenport, Florida. Both games were tight, but the Blazers were able to come out with two wins by identical scores of 6-5.

Game One
  • With two down and two on, the Blazers put the ball in play to score the first two runs of the game. They later added two more in the top of the second to lead, 4-0.
  • In the home half of the third, the Scots' Jonathan McIntyre led off the frame with a shot down the left field line. CJ Demers stepped up next and matched McIntyre with a single through the left side with no outs. Joey Kazlauskas then belted a 2-RBI double to left center to cut Elms' lead in half (4-2).
  • Jacob Blake started the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field and found himself on third a batter later. Next person up, Ben Marciano, placed a bunt down the first base line to plate Blake (6-3). To cap off the inning, Demers drove in Hunter Normandin thanks to a double to left to bring the score to 6-4.
  • The Scots nearly walked away with it, in the bottom of the seventh, but Elms held on for the one-run win (6-5). In 3.0 innings of relief, rookie Paul Donnelly allowed zero hits while striking out three.
Game Two
  • Down by four with Elms looking to add to their tally in the bottom of the third, Gabe Fales flashed his leather and athleticism for the second straight inning at the hot corner to keep the Blazers off the board. With one out and a runner at third, Fales ran down the base runner at home before tossing a throw to second to catch the runner trying to take an extra base to end the inning.
  • Normandin used his speed to beat out and infield single in the top of the fourth to knock in the Scots' first run of game two (4-1). Then, starting pitcher Jack Birtwell sat down the side in order with two strikeouts.
  • Looking to shrink the gap, Kazlauskas hit a towering fly ball over the left field fence with one duck on the pond to make it a 4-3 ball game in the fifth.
  • Robert Dunkle singles through the left side to send two teammates home and take their first lead of the game, 5-4. In the sixth, Elms was able to put two runs on the board to escape with the 6-5 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Hunter Normandin collected his first collegiate hit in game one and had his first two-hit game in the second contest.
  • CJ Demers booked his second three-hit game of the young season in game one.
  • Joey Kazlauskas knocked in a season-high two runs in the first game. Then, in game two belted out his first homer of the season and fifth of his young career.
  • Gordon plays for the third straight day tomorrow at the RussMatt Tournament and will face Minnesota Morris at 1 p.m. at Lake Myrtle.
