Bison Get By In Narrow Doubleheader Win Over Scots

Gordon College Baseball hosted the Nichols College Bison today for a Conference of New England (CNE) twin bill as the Fighting Scots celebrated Senior Day before the first game. The Bison took two wins over the Scots, 5-4 and 11-10.

Game One
  • Nichols scored a pair in the top of the first and slowly worked their way out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.
  • Evan Clark led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left center and was left stranded for two outs until classmate Robert Dunkle singled through the right side to bring Clark home (5-1).
  • Another lead-off hit did the trick for the Scots in the home half of the sixth as CJ Demers laced a single to left center and a few batters later moved up into scoring position thanks to a single up the middle from fellow senior Jonathan McIntyre. Then, Dunkle showed his discipline at the plate to load up up the bases with a walk. Still with two outs, Joey Kazlauskas sent Demers and McIntyre around the bases with a single right back up the middle to cut it to a two-run game (5-3).
  • Dunkle continued to be part of the action as the senior laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Tyler Wilson and make it a 5-4 ball game in the eighth inning. However, the Bison were able to sit the Scots down in order in the bottom of the ninth to escape with the narrow win.
  • Relief pitcher, Brett Moore, continued to roll from the rubber, holding Nichols scoreless through 4.0 innings of work, scattering just two hits and striking out two.
Game Two
  • Down 2-0 in the third and one runner aboard, Wilson belted a triple down the right field line before racing all the way home after a throwing error by the Nichols' defense (2-2).
  • In the fourth, Kazlauskas singled to center field, followed by singles from Jacob Hitchcock and Hunter Normandin to load the bases. Demers singled through the left side to put his squad on top, 4-2. Not done in the frame, Evan Clark hit another Gordon single before Wilson made it 5-2 with a sac fly to center field. Demers capped off the inning by scoring on a wild pitch to widen the gap to 6-2.
  • Hitchcock and Demers both registered RBI's in the fifth (8-3).
  • Nichols roared back in the sixth to put an eight-spot on the board and regain the lead (11-8). Gordon was able to score twice in the bottom of the inning but the Bison held on for the narrow win.
