Baseball Salvages Series Split with Johnson & Wales

WENHAM, Mass.-  The Gordon College baseball team halved a league doubleheader against Johnson & Wales, dropping the matinee game 11-9 before prevailing 5-3.
 

GAME ONE
THE BASICS:
Score: Gordon 9, Johnson & Wales 11
Records: Fighting Scots (10-19, 3-8 CNE) | Wildcats (10-19, 3-8 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johnson & Wales chalked up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to seize a 2-0 edge.
  • Gordon tallied one run in the bottom of the frame to slash the deficit to 2-1.
  • The Wildcats produced four runs in the second to widen the gap to 6-1.
  • The Fighting Scots plated one run in the home half of the second to narrow the margin to 6-2.
  • Johnson & Wales tacked on four runs in the third inning to extend its advantage to 10-2.
  • Gordon picked up a run in the third before the guests responded with one run in the top of the fourth to reclaim an eight-run lead, 11-3.
  • The hosts generated five runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning to pull to within two, 11-9.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Cam Wilbur (Dighton, Mass.) posted three hits, three RBIs, and a pair of runs scored.
  • Carter Shin (Burlington, Ont.) finished with two base hits, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • Tyler Wilson (Lynn, Mass.) drove in three RBIs to go with one hit, a run scored, and one stolen base.
  • Aaron Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) chipped in with two hits and one run scored.
  • Kevin Whalen (Lynn, Mass.) started on the mound and pitched three innings. Michael Pelletier (Clinton, Conn.), Casey Watson (Chester, N.H.), and Jacob Bettencourt (Attleboro, Mass.) all saw action out of the bullpen.

  • Johnson & Wales nabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning.
  • Gordon manufactured three runs in the bottom of the second to claim a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Fighting Scots added a run in the third to widen the margin to 4-1.
  • The Wildcats plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 4-3.
  • Gordon scored once in the home half of the eighth to regain a two-run cushion, 5-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Tyler Wilson (Lynn, Mass.) registered two hits, one run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Aaron Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) and Cam Wilbur (Dighton, Mass.) both collected two hits and scored one run.
  • Carter Shin (Burlington, Ontario) finished with two RBIs and a base knock.
  • Caleb Stuart (Chelmsford, Mass.) threw 4.2 innings in his sixth start and racked up six strikeouts. Matt Pancurak (Medford, N.J.) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and fanned four batters Gabe Fales (Middleton, Mass.) picked up his first save after working three innings and notching four strikeouts in his first appearance out of the bullpen.
