CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine- The Gordon College women's golf team traveled to Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, for the Southern Maine Community College Invitational Sunday, facing a six-team field that included several programs the Fighting Scots are likely to see again this season, including conference rival University of New England..
Frequent light rain did not threaten play, but an earlier tournament on the course delayed the women's competition and ultimately made daylight the afternoon's biggest challenge. The course itself was a difficult test, though
Myla Glaser and
Cassidy Costello both found early birdie opportunities as the Scots settled into their rounds.
As evening approached, only four Gordon players completed all 18 holes.
Elizabeth Parent and
Myla Glaser finished on the 18th green after sunset, with spectators' vehicles in the parking lot providing enough light to illuminate the green.
With groups still on the course and unable to finish in the dark, the competition was officially shortened to 16 holes for all players. Competing in a count-three format due to the host team's roster size, Gordon posted a 16-hole team score of
258 to finish third overall in the six-team field.
Gordon returns to competition September 26 when the Scots host Suffolk, Saint Anselm, the University of New England, Endicott, and Southern Maine Community College at Sagamore-Hampton Golf Club in North Hampton, N.H..
