Women's Rowing

Gordon Shines At Knecht Cup

Gordon College Women's Rowing traveled down to New Jersey to race at the historic Knecht Cup Regatta. The Fighting Scots competed in heats on Saturday then the finals on Sunday.

Saturday
  • In the first heat of the weekend for the Scots, the women's double comprised of Sarah Petrenko and LilyAnna Hopkins were second in their heat but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the grand finals (9:13.27). Petrenko and Hopkins were one boat away from the grand finals, however, they ended up holding the title of the fastest boat heading into the petite finals.
  • Mara Sell and Samantha Hansen battled challenging wave conditions to place fourth in the women's double in their respective heat.
  • The women's varsity four DIII had a strong heat Saturday afternoon and secured an open water win with a time of 8:42.20. Emily Soria coxed the boat of Victoria Maties, Petrenko, Sam Hansen, and Hopkins. Despite the other heat's winner having a faster time but only six seconds, the Scots beat out Case Western, Carnegie Mellon, Washington College, Bryn Mawr, and Haverford in their heat.
Sunday
  • Petrenko and Hopkins kicked off the day with an incredible victory in the women's double petite final to take the crown (8:18.11). In the tight race against MIT and Georgetown, the Hoyas led early but were unable to sustain it. The Scots kept to their game plan and kept their pace before out-sprinting MIT at the end to cross the finish line almost two seconds ahead of the Engineers.
  • An hour later, the women's varsity four DIII final took to the waters in a highly competitive fleet of teams. Washington College posted a faster time in Saturday's heats, but Gordon dominated the finals to take first place with a time of 8:10.02. Sorial was in control the entire race knowing exactly what to do to cox the boat to win. They were able to cruise in the middle of the race before switching into sprint mode at the end for an untouchable win.
  • Having zero time to steer into the medal docks, Petrenko, Hopkins, and Hansen had to immediately go to the recovery dock to jump into the quad and get to the start within 20 minutes to compete in the women's varsity quad final with Mara Sell. Despite Sell's steering cable snapping in the gritty race, Gordon came out aggressive in the first 500m to command a comfortable three-four boat lead. The quad orchestrated a clean and sharp race to cruise to an open water win over Dominican (N.Y.). The crew was able to now go into the medal dock to put on back-to-back medals.
Next up for the Scots is a local race as they with battle at Merrimack on Saturday, April 19.
